Permanent Exhibitions

Located in Hatches 2 and 5 you find our
permanent exhibitions.

"The Handling of Mixed Cargo and Containers" a constantly running exhibition.

Historical and up-to date photos plus detailed informations demonstrate the handling of cargo since 1960 in an exposition in No. 2 hatch presented on 11 big screens. The handling of mixed cargo on board of ships and on the quayside in former times is as well presented as the handling of modern containers and their locking and securing systems on board of modern container ships. The logistics in a modern container terminal are explained and a comparison of ship’s sizes of earlier times and today gives a lively impression of the technical development in this area.

A Suitcase Filled with Hope

"A Suitcase Filled with Hope" a constantly running exhibition.

Located in Hatch 5 you find the permanent exhibition "A Suitcase Filled with Hope". From 1834 to 1920 five million people from all over Europe left their homes via Hamburg. Whether for social or economical reasons, or because of religious and/or political persecution, they all began here in Hamburg a new chapter of their lives.

"A Suitcase Filled with Hope" takes the visitor along on a tour into the time of journeys from Europe to America: beginning with the worries and hardships the peoples of Europe suffered, further onto the procedures to be undertaken before they were allowed passage and finally to their journey on board and their arrival in the long-desired land of hope. A lively picture of this time is illustrated by presentation boards, tapes, letters and comics.

Since December 2013 a new part of the exhibition shows that emigration from Germany is still an ubiquitous phenomenon. Using texts, pictures and graphics, the new section asks for reasons to emigrate from Germany nowadays, where the emigrants get their ideas, about how they prepare, what are their difficulties and what kind of experiences they make in their new home country.
